Last year, when a young Seymour squad made it to the WIAA Division 2 boys sectional basketball final, there was optimism the Thunder would return the following year.

They have, with a 23-2 record, but had to struggle against Little Chute to do so after an easy win over conference foe West De Pere.

Behind Calahan Skogman’s 22 points, Seymour took control early with a 20-5 second-quarter edge. That gave the Thunder a 44-18 halftime lead and the rest was simple.

Phil Romback added 14 points and Dylan VanBoxtel 13 for Seymour in the March 4 semifinal at Seymour.

At Kimberly March 6, the high-scoring Thunder needed a lot of defense to hang on against 21-4 Little Chute.

The halftime score of Little Chute 12, Seymour 9 told the story – both teams clamped down on defense and left few openings.

Little Chute broke the logjam first, getting on a run to take a 23-14 lead.

But Seymour had a matching run as Skogman scored eight points during an 11-2 streak that left the game tied at 25-25 in the early minutes of the fourth quarter.

Little Chute briefly took back the lead, but a turnover and a Romback basket gave Seymour the lead back and free throw shooting down the stretch kept it in control.

The Mustangs had one last chance but a late 3-point try by J.J. Martin rimmed out.

Skogman had 19 points and Romback 14. No Little Chute player scored more than eight.
