About a half-dozen kids from 5 years told to fifth grade scamper up and down the playground equipment at Shiocton School, burning off some of the energy they have built up during a day of classwork.

It is the way most afternoons in the Fox West YMCA School Age Child Care Program begins.

A bit later in the afternoon, teacher Amy Hurlbut will pass out a snack, then help with homework and provide an activity for the children.

“This week the theme is horses,” she said. “We will have a floor puzzle.” Children also get some time and help with their homework, so they don’t have to tackle so much at home during the evening.

Child Care Services Coordinator Jean Gloudemans said they saw a need for after-school care in Shiocton and the service has been in operation since October.

Along with fun and projects, the program also promotes core values of the YMCA – caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

The Y operates afterschool programs at its Greenville YMCA and Hortonville.

School Age Supervisor Katie Fickel visits the operations on a regular basis and said Shiocton’s has been very successful.

Along with after-school activities, the program is available on early release days and other no-school days.

Fees are based on a flat rate and financial assistance is available. Registration for next fall is now open. Anyone interested can contact the Fox West YMCA at 920-757-9820 or contact Shiocton Elementary School for more information.
