Legion baseball makes Shiocton debut this summer

Shiocton’s first American Legion baseball team will take the field this summer.
The team, for ages 15-19, will play in the Central Wisconsin Legion League and host games at the high school field. The first home game is June 21.
“I thought about doing this last year,” said John Majerus, who is a director of the village’s summer sports program and a Babe Ruth League coach.
“The kids who are done with Babe Ruth have nothing to do – nothing to progress to. So I bounced the idea off a couple of people to get the ball rolling.”
He got a good response from both local sports supporters and the Shiocton American Legion post, which sponsors the team.
“They’re excited about it,” said Majerus, who added the Legion would provide a color guard for the team’s first home game.
The group organizing the league is collecting donations for startup costs. Majerus said keeping the team going will cost between $1,200-$1,500 a year.
“We’ve got some good donations so far,” he said.
Chris VanderHeyden, district administrator at Shiocton Schools, will coach the team and is currently recruiting players.
The team will play in the CWLL’s North Division, which includes defending champion Clintonville, Bonduel, Marion, Wittenberg, Manawa and Menominee.
Clintonville, 13-1 last season, has won state championships in Class A in 2007 and 2008.
One thing the team does not yet have is a nickname. “We can’t use Chiefs,” Majerus said.
High schoolers are being asked to suggest names, with the top 10 selections going to the team’s board for a final pick.
Donations can be dropped off at the First National Bank in downtown Shiocton or sent to Majerus, W7571 Park Ave., Shiocton 54170. For more information contact Majerus, 920-470-3055, or VanderHeyden at the school district office, 986-3351.
