Rick Slager of Fond du Lac County put the TOMATO in Tomato Fest at the Seymour Farmers’ Market on Tuesday, Aug. 30.
Slager grows more than 70 varieties of tomatoes on his Produce for a Purpose farm and brought a selection of his crop to Seymour.
The tomatoes are one of the staples of a much larger effort in which Slager is involved.
He’s part of an organization called the Rural Empowerment Initiative, an effort to teach people in struggling economies how to grow high-value crops.
They have mounted efforts in Liberia, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Senegal in West Africa.
“We’re always looking for skilled volunteers,” Slager said.
Farmers’ Market volunteer Lori Amerson said they were pleased with the turnout for Tuesday’s event.
“We had a couple new vendors and it was a fun and successful event,” she said. The market continues through mid-October.
