Students campaign against the “R” word; assist with Special Olympics

For the past three years, many Black Creek students and staff have joined the national campaign to “Spread the Word to End the Word.” The “R”-word – retard(ed) was originally a medical term with a specific clinical connotation. However, the words “retard” and “retarded” have been used widely to degrade and insult people with intellectual disabilities.
The Black Creek Middle School has taken a role in this campaign again this year to be aware of how this affects others and has pledged to end the “R”-word.
“Everyone has a gift and the world would be better off if we recognized it,” Timothy Shriver, chairman and CEO of Special Olympics said.
Black Creek students and staff volunteered for the Special Olympics track and field events in Appleton on Saturday, May 12.
