An amended ordinance approved by the Shiocton village board allowing utility-terrain vehicles to follow the all-terrain vehicle regulations and use of the highways has a major flaw.
According to Village Clerk Laurie Bunnell, she says the State will not allow anyone to ride UTV’s and ATV’s on the highway.
“The ordinance stands but we are working on alternate routes to not use the state highways,” Bunnell said. “You can cross them, but you can’t ride on them.”
The ordinance goes into effect July 1 and was amended and approved by the village board at their June 11 meeting.
A main problem is that the Village of Shiocton is made up of three State highways, according to Bunnell.
“We are working on back routes,” she said.
Some parts of the highways will be allowed because they are direct routes. An example Bunnell gave was the crossing of the bridge on State Hwy. 54.
“You can go over the bridge because that’s a direct route,” she said.
Police Chief Eugene Bunnell is working on the alternative routes for those residents who do not have direct routes to the approved streets.
Chief Bunnell also plans on talking to someone who owns farmland to see if he would allow an easement to drive on his farmland to get from the mobile home court to the park.
