An amended ordinance allowing utility-terrain vehicles to follow the all-terrain vehicle regulations has now been put on hold by Shiocton Police Chief Eugene Bunnell.
He informed the board and provided an update at their July 9 meeting..
The ordinance, approved by the board on June 11, now needs to be revised to meet State regulations.
State law translates that the Village has the right to restrict their ATV rules but not relax them, according to Police Chief Eugene Bunnell
The State will not allow ATV’s to run on the State highways, they can only be crossed.
Bunnell is working on alternate routes for the residents on the east end of the Village and other residents who do not have a direct route.
He is checking into a route near Colwitz’s that will connect with Morgan Avenue.
Bunnell added that Tom VanHandel has been contacted about a possible route from the east side using his property.
He also has talked to the county parks department about the residents on East Street/Elm Street getting over the walking trail. If the DNR refuses to allow it then the State rules kick in which says the most direct route would be Highway 76. As of right now the local DNR warden is against the ATV ordinance.
Bunnell is hoping to have things in place by the August 13 meeting.
He will be handing out flyers on the rules that will be enforced with the ordinance.
There will be a $10 annual registration fee, all ATV drivers must have a valid driver’s license, and owners must have their ATV inspected by the Village officer.
