Center Valley Grade School was built in 1887 on one half acre of land sold to the school district for $10.00 by John Weihing, grandfather of Gilbert and Marvin Weihing, who lived on the farm next door. This school was one of seven one-room schools serving the Township of Center. For 82 years, local farming families sent their children to the school, where one teacher instructed students in grades 1-8. It served in that manner until 1958. In 1999, a group of former students and local citizens purchased the structure and restored it to its 1940s condition. After 8 years of volunteer work on the project, a re-dedication ceremony was held on August 11, 2007. The site was added to the State and National Register of Historic Places August 20, 2010. The present school building is 130 years old.
The Center Emmanuel Church is having an open house and other activities will be taking place.
A music tent will feature Bruce Lohrenz and company playing music to entertain.
The church history is rooted to the years of the Civil War when our nation was struggling for its very existence. The present brick structure was built in 1916 at an approximate cost of $4,000. They installed the most beautiful large stained glass windows. Today this historic country church is growing with traditions of the past that relate to today’s world.
Enjoy the old-fashioned ice cream social at the Church from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The ladies of the church are baking homemade pies for the ice cream social and treats for the bake sale. Tour the church and view the awesome stained glass windows. Members share the history of the church and car songs played on an old Victrola. Come, browse and enjoy the day.
