Navarino Hills announced they will not be opening this season.
Hunter White, who has run Navarino Hills for the last eight years, said unfortunately this year they will not be opening Navarino Hills.
In past years, White said they were able to offer many activities at their venue.
“We offered skiing and tubing up until last season, [when] we just offered tubing,” White said. “We did not offer skiing last year because we had damage to the top area of our chair lift, not our chair lift itself.”
He said they did look at what it would take to repair the area.
“The land at the top area is washing away and there is not really a good solution to the problem,” White said. “It would be expensive to do a concrete retaining wall with no guarantee it would hold.”
Last season, he said they remained open and only offered tubing, but he said that just wasn’t possible to continue doing.
“But after losing skiing we decided to try doing only tubing, but due to high operating costs/insurance and losing a majority of our income due to losing skiing [it] would be extremely difficult [to stay open].”
Navarino Hills (formerly Navarino Slopes) had been in White’s family for about 15 years and he said they loved the years they had operating it. As of right now he said the future of it is unsure.
“We hope that it will reopen in the future, but I’m not sure it will happen,” White said. “We enjoyed all the families that came out to learn to ski with us and go tubing over the years and will miss all the customers we’ve had.”
