The Shiocton School Board met on Monday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m.
Matt Wilkinson, former Shiocton graduate gave the board a presentation of the summer IT (Information Technology) Projects. Superintendent Nichole Schweitzer said, Wilkinson started his apprenticeship in his junior year of high school, he was the first student apprentice. She said they redid the computer system and Wilkinson has had a big part of it. Wilkinson worked closely with Sadie O’Brien (technology director) all through high school.
One project Wilkinson was involved in last summer was to move the computer lab from downstairs to upstairs, moving all physical furniture and then re-routing all the data cable. There were 28 cables to re-route so Wilkinson and maintenance decided to make use of the unused laundry shoot to reroute the cable since the existing cable chase was too small. This will allow future cable expansion if needed.
Wilkinson said they had to pull over 400 feet of cable through the rafters. Once the cables were run they had to terminate the ends so they could be used. He decided to color code the panel and the cables with switches for easier identification.
Wilkinson said he learned how to terminate a cable end and how to set up a patch panel. He said, “I also learned that pulling cable through a two story building is extremely difficult, one story would have been easier, but we took on the challenge and got it done. Problems of this magnitude are easier to complete as a team than by yourself.”
The project took about three weeks, Wilkinson said he built relationships with co-workers and vendors which made the process easier.
Wilkinson is attending the technical college for network specialist, a general two year program and said his experience at the Shiocton school is definitely helping with his classes.
He also helped with the new multi-purpose facility and all the networking that went into it. Wilkinson said it was a good experience because it was a new building so the challenge was different and it has been a lot of fun.
In new business the board took action and approved the Spanish Club trip to Guatemala for the summer of 2020.
The board approved the hiring of Mike Schmaling, Mark Westby and Mitch Meisenhelder as fitness center supervisors for the Shiocton public fitness center.
They approved the hiring of Eric Clausen and Jimmy Peters, co-head varsity wrestling coaches, John Pashouwer as assistant/JV wrestling coach and Dom Gunderson as middle school wrestling coach.
The board approved the resignation of Hailee Boucher, from the Shiocton Child Care Center due to health problems, they hope to re-hire her in the future.
They approved the 2019 Summer School Agreement and took action and approved the Badger State Girls and Boys sponsorships for the school year.
